Comparison of website before and after redesign

Project: Redesigned website for
Massachusetts ME/CFS & FM Assoc.

The Massachusetts ME/CFS & FM Assocation were using an outdated version of Joomla to maintain their site, but the version had reached end of life.

Working closely with the Association team members, I redesigned and rebuilt their site, moving it from Joomla to a more user-friendly Wordpress environment.

My foci were three-fold:

  • Make the site more organized

  • Make it more user-friendly

  • Update the design to a more modern look

The existing site suffered from an overabundance of menus and links without a clear hierarchy. We also took this opportunity to scrub a lot of outdated content from the site.

From the client:

“Working with Mr. Trudell has been an absolute delight. He is thoughtful, pragmatic, highly responsive, conscientious and professional. Our project was completed on time and (after adding items to the scope of work) within budget. We heartily recommend Josh Trudell for website design and development work, without reservation.”

Project: St. Mary’s University Greehey School of Business Guidebook

St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, has been a client for some time. Projects have included books, posters, flyers, and more.

In this case, I was asked to design the annual guidebook for the Greehey School of Business, including creating the infographics on the second page shown here. I worked closely with the team at the school to build a product that met the school’s communication standards.

Project: Mass Save Infographic
on Tier 2 Advanced Power Strips

I had never heard of a tier 2 Advanced Power Strip when I was asked to make this infographic.

I researched, wrote, and designed this infographic to highlight the benefits of these power strips, including how some plugs have constant power and others do not.

Project: Future Harvest Annual Report

I enjoy working with nonprofits, and one of the groups I work with regularly is Future Harvest, a farming advocacy cooperative based in the mid-Atlantic states.

I developed this page for their 2022 annual report, and we’ve adapted it every year since, changing the numbers and updating the graphics.

From the client:

“His ability to makes sense of my early, scatter-brained notes and create clear and beautiful designs is incredible. Each time I reach out with a short deadline and big dreams, he manages to swiftly turn around a stunning solution. Josh has exceeded our expectations designing everything from save-the-date postcards, print ads, and digital ads to full, 20+ page conference programs.

Project: New edition of A Regional Imperative report

I worked with the authors to redesign and reformat their 150+ page report from beginning to end.
I redesigned the report, updated the images in some cases and developed completely new images in others, and delivered a more readable product that exceeded the client’s expectations.

Project: Technical documentation

This is an example of a technical document I designed. I have designed a wide variety of white papers, technical manuals, and other documents for laboratories and engineering firms.

Many of them contain proprietary information. I am under NDAs regarding those documents.

Project: Image creation/branding for Truth: a biofictional choreopoem

This project was for Truth: a biofictional choreopoem, which is a production developed and written by playwright Gail Burton about 19th century Black abolitionists.

The play combines spoken word, storytelling, movement, and music. The rivers of text around the center figure was meant to emphasize both the topic and the shifting patterns in the production.

Project: Image creation/branding for NESAWG on Juneteenth

This project was for Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Working Group, a farming cooperative in the Northeast. The group was rebranding to be more of a force for representation and diversity, and this image helped reflect that as part of the celebration of Juneteenth.

There were a lot of text blocks to include, but I made an effort to include them in a colorful fashion in order to advance the dynamic aesthetic.

This image was adapted for social media and use on the website.

Project: Logos

I’ve worked with several companies to develop logos reflecting their brand and mission.

Touch of an Angel Tattoo Co.: The shop owner came to me with an idea of wings with ink. Working together, we developed this logo.

Mills Mountain Retreat: The retreat, a new business, wanted a logo that incorporated mountain peaks. I developed several concepts that we discussed before landing on the right solution.

KD Seasonal Services: A relatively simple logo request from a one-man property maintenance business who wanted something he could put on his truck. Saw blade around the outside for tree-cutting, then additional tools on the inside.

American Library Association: This is a seal for the Outstanding Audiobook Narration award the association handed out.

Project: Advertising

One of my abilities is coming up with text to capture viewers attention.

The catch phrase in this ad: “Your Home is Your Castle. A Castle needs Cannons” started from the company’s desire to market this product as a home-defense offering.

The .450 is a large caliber, which led me to Cannons as a key word.

The campaign was well-received by customers.

From the client:

“Josh drove our social presence and brand awareness to new levels with his experience and diligence. His ability to take a rough concept and bring it to a finished product that exceeded our expectations time after time was key. We consistently saw our reach and awareness across all channels grow in the industry because of Josh’s efforts. We were fortunate to have him on board!”

Project: Two-page infographic

I researched (thank goodness for microfilm!), wrote, and designed this two-page spread on boxer Evander Holyfield before he fought in San Antonio.

This design won a 2006 Society of News Design award. And, Holyfield liked it so much that he requested a copy for himself.

From the client:

“Josh is one of the most talented designers with whom I've worked, if not the most talented. With few exceptions, he was called upon to design our most important and memorable display packages, and he always came through. He also is a fine colleague in every sense of the term.”
