Bracken ferns were a staple in Māori diets, serving as one of their primary sources of carbohydrates. The Māori god Haumia-tiketike is a god of wild and uncultivated food, including ferns.

These bracken ferns were found in one of the forests around Aoraki (Mt. Cook).
