Mountains are spiritual places to the Māori people. Rising towards the realms of Ranginui the Sky Father, they are places of great spiritual presence.

A Māori proverb states: ‘Mehemea ka tuohu ahau me maunga teitei’ (If I should bow my head let it be to a high mountain).

This peak is visible from Westland National Park.
