Aoraki (Mount Cook) is the highest peak in New Zealand. To the Māori, it represents the most sacred of ancestors, providing the iwi (tribe) with its sense of identity, solidarity and purpose.

Its presence is seen as a Tōpuni, or cloak over the land, a public symbol of the tribe’s soveriegnty and self determination.
