Mirage of the Ocean
The Southern Alps (Kā Tiritiri o te Moana) was named “The Mirage of the Ocean” by the Māori. English explorer James Cook called them the Southern Alps in 1770. From a helicopter, it looks like the waves of the ocean are smashing against the unyielding mountains. This was taken near Mount Cook (Aoraki).
