The Wānaka tree is a crack willow tree, and there are several of them lining the edge of Lake Wānaka. Crack (also called brittle) willows, are fragile, and people have broken branches from this one since it became well-known. Sitting on the beach as the sun rose behind us, the tree started to glow as the sunlight struck it.
