Haka of the Mountains
The haka is the well-known traditional war dance of the Māori people, signifying pride, strength, and unity. The clouds swirling around the mountains look as if they are doing a haka of their own, showing their unity with the peaks and the sky.
This is near Fox Glacier, on the western coast. The glacier is known by Māori as Te Moeka o Tuawe ('The bed of Tuawe'). Legend has it the warrior Tuawe was climbing the mountain with his lover Hine Hukatere when he was buried under an avalanche.
Hine Hukatere was heartbroken. Her tears formed the nearby glacier now known as Franz Josef, while the Fox Glacier became Tuawe's final resting place. (Source: Te Ara, The Encyclopedia of New Zealand)
